Centre for Behavioural and Experimental Social Science Research Study Participation
Welcome to the online system for participating in research studies at the Centre for Behavioural and Experimental Social Science at University of East Anglia. We invite UEA students at all levels to have the opportunity to earn money in decision-making experiments at the Centre. No special skills or background are required to participate. In these sessions, you will be asked to make decisions, either on your own or as part of groups. In all experimental sessions, you will earn prizes - normally cash -
which depend on the decisions you and other participants make. In addition to the prizes, our participants generally tell us they find our experiments fun and a good way to exercise one's brain.
We have only a few rules to help keep order, which we outline on this page.
Eligibility requirements
To participate in research studies at CBESS, you must:
- Currently be a registered student (undergraduate or postgraduate) at UEA.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Comfortable with using a computer (moving a mouse, light typing on a keyboard, etc.)
Registration
- Register only one time. Participants found to have registered multiple times may be removed from the system and disqualified from participating in any future studies.
- If you are not certain if you have registered in the past, or you have forgotten your login details, please contact the CBESS staff at cbess.experiments@uea.ac.uk for assistance.
- Registration places your email address on a contact list announcing future sessions, and does not commit you to doing anything. You may withdraw your name from the list at any time.
Information about studies
- Periodically, you will receive emails inviting you to participate in sessions for which you might be eligible. Be sure to read the study description carefully before signing up, as some studies may have additional eligibility criteria.
- Each invitation email will include a link you can visit to sign up yourself for the session.
- Please only sign up for a session if you sincerely intend to participate. Verify the time and location of the session carefully. Participants must arrive on time to be eligible to participate and to receive payment. Many sessions require a minimum or specific number of participants, so if you do not show up to a session for which you sign up, you may also inconvenience other participants who sign up for the session.
- If you sign up for a session and subsequent events prohibit you from attending, please contact cbess.experiments@uea.ac.uk as promptly as possible with your name and the session on which you have to cancel.
- Only participants who sign up in advance may participate in a session.
- Participants who fail to show up on time to a session without contacting CBESS staff on cbess.experiments@uea.ac.uk may be excluded from invitations for future opportunities to participate in sessions.
- You will be required to present your UEA ID on arrival to participate in a session.
- Sessions typically last from 30 minutes to two hours. The length of the session, and prospective earnings for the session, will be outlined on each invitation you receive. Please do not sign up if you anticipate you cannot stay for the maximum stated duration of the session.
- Sessions may take place either in ARTS 3.05 or in our laboratory in the Zicer building. Please read the session invitation carefully and note the location of the session, so you can be sure to go to the correct place. Look for signs with the CBESS logo to help you find your way.
Privacy policy
- When you register, we will ask you to provide a few personal details. We use these solely to determine your eligibility for sessions, and never pass these on to anyone else. In particular, participation in these sessions, or the results of your decisions in these sessions, will never have any effect on your standing with UEA.
- We record all decisions made during these sessions separately from our database of registered participants. No linking between individual decisions made during a session and your personal information is possible; that is, all decisions are anonymous. When results from these studies are published in scholarly and scientific outlets, there is no way to trace decisions back to you. We never disclose identifying information about participants in our studies.
